While the specific term “Global Phenomenal” might not have been applied to Hildegard von Bingen in common use, her widespread impact, enduring relevance, extraordinary and multi-faceted contributions make her a figure whose influence could be considered as having a global and exceptional reach, embodying many characteristics associated with the idea of a “Global Phenomenal.”

Six reasons Hildegard is known worldwide

Saint Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179) was a remarkable medieval woman known for her contributions to various fields. She was a mystic, composer, writer, herbalist, and visionary, and her work continues to influence and inspire people worldwide.

Here are six reasons she is known globally:

  1. Mysticism and Spirituality: Saint Hildegard is recognized as a prominent mystic and visionary of the Middle Ages. She claimed to receive divine visions and messages from a young age, which she chronicled in her writings. Her spiritual insights and teachings have resonated with many people seeking a deeper connection to the divine.
  2. Music and Compositions: Hildegard composed a significant body of liturgical music, including chants and hymns, which were unique for their time. Her compositions are characterized by their haunting melodies and expressive qualities. She is considered one of the earliest known composers in history, and her music is performed and appreciated by musicians and listeners worldwide.
  3. Scientific and Herbal Knowledge: Hildegard’s writings include detailed accounts of her observations and beliefs about the natural world. She was an early herbalist and recorded her knowledge of medicinal plants and their healing properties. Her work “Physica” provides insights into her understanding of the connections between nature, health, and well-being.
  4. Feminine Spirituality and Leadership: In an era when women’s voices were often suppressed, Hildegard’s leadership and teachings were exceptional. She founded two monastic communities and served as the abbess of her own convent. Her influence as a female spiritual leader challenged traditional gender roles and continues to inspire women’s empowerment.
  5. Artistic Expression: Hildegard was also an accomplished artist and illustrator. She created intricate illustrations to accompany her writings, depicting her visions and concepts. Her artistic contributions showcase her multi-faceted talents and the ways in which she integrated creativity into her spiritual and intellectual work.
  6. Holistic Approach to Health: Saint Hildegard’s understanding of health was holistic, encompassing the physical, emotional, and spiritual dimensions of well-being. Her insights into the interconnectedness of these aspects of human life have resonated with modern approaches to holistic health and wellness.

Maya Angelou

Maya Angelou, an iconic figure of the 20th and 21st centuries, stands as one of the most influential women of our time. Her impact is profound and far-reaching, touching upon numerous aspects of literature, civil rights, activism, art, and personal empowerment. Her writing pulls on the hearts of many readers. In addition to her proliferous writing career, Maya Angelou has been a civil rights activist. This poem shows how even though someone is not beautiful on the outside compared to society’s standards, there is an inner beauty that makes a woman even more beautiful.  While I don’t know if Maya knew of Hildegard or not, I think this section of her poem fits well with the image that I have of Saint Hildegard.  I hope you think so too.

It’s the fire in my eyes, And the flash of my teeth, The swing in my waist, And the joy in my feet. I’m a woman Phenomenally.
